New Paragraph

Do You Need Trenchless Water Main Replacement?

A typical main water line can last 50-75 years or more, but over time, underground pipes can crack or deteriorate with exposure to the elements. Pipe corrosion, water system pressure events, extreme freeze/thaw events, seismic or other events that cause soil to shift can all cause leaks or breaks in your property’s main water service line. Spotting the signs of a main water line break are critical to take action to prevent further damage. Traditional plumbing methods involve digging big trenches to access underground water lines, which leads to environmental damage and other issues. But when you’re evaluating options in the event of a water main break that requires a full water line replacement, trenchless water line replacement can be a great option that is both cost effective, fast and minimizes impact to your property.

What is Trenchless

Water Line Replacement?

Trenchless water line replacement refers to a range of technologies and methods, using specialized tools and processes that enable underground pipes, including plumbing lines, to be replaced without having to dig trenches across the entire path of the water service line. Instead, small entry and exit points are created, and the damaged water line is replaced, frequently using the existing pipe as host, working underground to insert the new piping. With trenchless water main replacement, water service lines can be restored much quicker than with full excavation, and the disruption to your property and landscaping is minimized. Trenchless methods are cost-effective and minimally invasive, making it a great choice for both homeowners and commercial property owners in Salt Lake.

Benefits of Trenchless Water Line Replacement

The benefits of trenchless main water line replacement have made it the preferred method of main water line specialists, plumbers, homeowners and commercial property owners alike

  • Minimal Property Damage

Trenchless water line replacement minimizes disruption to your property, not requiring removal of trees, driveways, sidewalks, grass etc, or incurring the cost to replant, re-sod, or re-pour concrete. Trenchless methods are also effective for sewer line replacement, preventing extensive property damage.

  • Cost-Effective Solution

Trenchless water line repair is the most cost effective approach, both in terms of direct costs, saving time on labor and materials, and indirect costs when taking into account the total costs of restoring your property when the line has been replaced.

  • Access to Hard-to-Reach Areas

Trenchless methods can access hard-to-reach areas that traditional methods might struggle with. Whether the pipes are under a building or under a driveway or tree or other landscaping, trenchless technology can handle the job with minimal excavation.

  • Safer Process

Trenchless water line replacement is safer for both the workers and property owners. Underground utility lines can be missed and heavy equipment can cause damage.  The trenchless process just lowers risks all around.

Trenchless water line replacement offers the best of all worlds: faster, cheaper, and more durable, while being safer and better for the environment.

  • Faster Completion Time

Trenchless technology allows for a faster water line repair process. Traditional methods can take several days or even weeks to repair leaks, but trenchless water line replacement can be completed in just one day. The quick turnaround time means less disruption to your daily routine and faster restoration of your water service.

  • Environmentally Friendly

Trenchless methods of water line replacement are also environmentally friendly. By reducing the amount of excavation needed, disruption to the surrounding environment of trees, bushes and grass is minimized.  Heavy equipment and large piles of dirt dug out over a long swath of land takes its toll on the local environment.

  • Durability

Since many trenchless leaves the broken pipes in place, these pipes can actually act as an outer protective layer to the new pipes, improving its already native durability.

When is Trenchless Water Main Repair the Right Solution?

When Trenchless Water Line Repair is Ideal

Trenchless water line repair is an ideal solution when there are significant above-ground obstacles over the run of the water service line that would be costly to remove and replace, where the existing pipe runs largely straight, has limited offset joints or branch connections, and is in good enough condition to support running new pipe through it.

Limitations of Trenchless

Pipe Repair

Even though trenchless water line replacement works well in the vast majority of cases, there are projects that are not good candidates for trenchless replacement.  Extremely long pipes, collapsed pipes or pipes that are so severely broken that they cannot support as a conduit foreclose many of the trenchless options.  Pipes that run under the structure, or complex soil or rocky conditions can foreclose other options. And there are instances where the necessary access points aren’t available.

Water Main Utah can evaluate the conditions of your water lines and determine if your property is a good fit for a trenchless water line repair.  Our goal is to deliver the most cost effective, fast solution to your water line problem to get your water flowing again.

Trenchless Water Line Replacement Methods

There are several trenchless water line replacement methods that can be used in the commercial, light-industrial and residential context, depending on the circumstances of your property. Each has the benefit of preserving landscapes and minimizing disruption. While these methods are often used for water lines, they can also be applied to sewer pipes, though the challenges and limitations may differ. Here are the main methods used in trenchless water line replacement:

Pipe Bursting

Pipe Bursting is a trenchless method that breaks or ‘bursts’ open the existing pipe through hydraulic force, creating a path that pulls new pipe in the cavity created in one motion.  An expansion ‘bursting’ head is pulled with a cable and winch, through the existing water line, simultaneously replacing it with a new line.

Pipe Bursting is Water Main Utah’s preferred method for trenchless water line replacement if creating the necessary access points is cost effective.  Pipe Bursting has the advantage that it allows replacing existing piping with a larger diameter pipe for improved water flow.  Pipe Bursting works effectively with most pipe material used in underground water pipes here in Utah and can be used regardless of the condition of existing pipe.

Pipe Lining / Cured in Place Lining / CIPP

Cured In Place Pipe Lining (CIPP) forms a new pipe within the structure of the existing damaged pipe by inserting an epoxy-soaked liner into the damaged pipe, inflating it with an air bladder, and then heating it to harden.  Pipe Lining has two advantages over Pipe Bursting: (1) it only requiring access to one end of the pipe in order to reline the pipe, making it useful in difficult access scenarios and (2) it doesn’t expand the old pipe, making it useful in scenarios where there is no ability to expand around the pipe, or when doing so would cause damage.  Pipe Lining requires the condition of the existing pipe to have maintained its circular structure and be sufficiently intact to host the new pipe.  Pipe Lining has the disadvantage that, since it is creating a pipe within the damaged pipe, it reduces the diameter, reducing somewhat the water flow capacity.

Mini- Horizontal Directional Drilling / Directional Boring

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) bores a hole horizontally into the ground from an entry access point near the water meter to an exit access point near the structure allowing installation of a new underground water pipe without the need for an existing pipe.  Directional Drilling is an excellent trenchless method where the existing water service lateral is can’t be utilized or when relocating a line.  Directional Drilling makes the most sense across a yard or landscaped area and isn’t a viable method to install pipe under a slab or in areas where there are unknown utility lines in the vicinity of the drilling.

Which Trenchless Water Line Repair Method is Best?

Choosing the right trenchless technology and method is highly dependent on the circumstances of your property and existing water lines. Water Main Utah can choose the right technology for your job based on our expertise and experience. Trenchless Pipe Bursting is Water Main Utah’s preferred method for most projects due to its versatility to work in most scenarios, the reliability of the replacement pipe, the shorter time-frame it can be completed and its capability to increase pipe diameter and water flow.

Cured in Place Pipe Lining is a useful method for trenchless water line repair in situations where access to an entry point is difficult or where the surrounding materials could be damaged by the Pipe Bursting or Directional Drilling methods, such as for pipe failures in a slab or foundation.

Directional Drilling is a great method for trenchless water line installation where the existing pipe can’t be used as a conduit as required by Pipe Bursting and Pipe Lining, or for relocating a water line.

Trenchless Water Main Replacement Process

Water Main Utah conducts a camera inspection to determine the condition of your water service lateral and identify any issues, like crack or leak location or pipe blockages.  Once we determine the best trenchless replacement method, we create the necessary access to the line.  For Pipe Bursting, we insert the bursting head and pull the new pipe through the line.  For Directional Drilling, we bore a pilot hole, enlarge it for the new line then pull the pipe through the hole.  For Cured in Place Pipe Lining, we insert an epoxy lining into the line, then roll the liner into contact with the pipe walls, then insert an air bladder to and inflate it until the epoxy cures. Once the new pipes are in place, they are connected to your home’s plumbing system. A final inspection is conducted to ensure everything is working correctly and that there are no leaks. The access holes are then filled, and the area is restored to its original condition.

Cost of Trenchless Water Line Replacement in Salt Lake City

Trenchless Water Line Replacement Cost typically ranges between $100 to $300 per linear foot in the Salt Lake City area, but the cost of a project is heavily dependent on the trenchless water line replacement method used, and the individual circumstances of the property and water lines.

Pipe Bursting and Directional Drilling typically costs $100 - $250 per linear foot, while Pipe Lining typically costs $150-$300 per linear foot

The key variables in determining the cost are the existing pipe depth, the length of the water line, the accessibility of the necessary access points, the old pipe material and the new pipe material use, whether your system has branch connections or offset joints, slope of the existing pipe, and any surface restoration requirements.

Due to the large number of variables impacting the scope of a trenchless water line replacement and its complexity, cost per linear foot metrics can be a misleading indicator of ultimate costs.
