While most water main replacements are the result of a burst service water pipe under conditions where the damaged pipe isn’t worth repairing, many property owners may also need to replace or relocate their existing line to support increasing water flow as part of improvements to the property or to support an irrigation or sprinkler system.
Depending on the circumstances of your service water line replacement needs, we have an array of water service line relocation, line enhancement and replacement options, including temporary workarounds, which we can propose based on your needs and conditions to achieve the optimal and most cost effective strategy to get the job done with minimal disruption to your property.
Determining if you have a burst water main or a main water line leak can be especially challenging in Utah since the pipes are buried deep underground to protect them from freezing or can run under concrete slabs. But in our dry climate here in the Salt Lake Valley, unexplained water or moisture should be cause for concern. The following are solid clues and warning signs that something is wrong with your water service lines that requires immediate attention:
Unexplained or a Sudden Drop in Water Pressure, such as your shower not having pressure or water pressure dropping when more than one water valve is opened at once.
Unusually and Inexplicably High Water Bill
Unusual large and soggy wet areas in the yard or an unusually green patch of grass
Unexplainable water leaks appearing and pooling in your home or property, especially in the basement, under sinks or on the floor
Contaminated water, and dirty or discolored water can be a symptom of a water line break
Unexplained damp drywall, mold on walls or ceilings or musty scent
New or expanding foundation cracks in your property in the area where the water main is located.
Noises coming from the water service line
Poor water pressure due to improper installation of the main water line
A reliable way to evaluate if you have a water line leak is to turn off all water fixtures in your property and then observe if there is any activity on your water meter. If your water meter continues to register water flow, even with all fixtures turned off, it’s a telltale sign of a water line leak. For more complex situations, we advise running a leak detection test, which requires specialized know how and equipment. Our team of water main specialists at Water Main Utah can conduct a leak detection test for you to confirm and identify any leaks you may have.
If you’re experiencing one or more of these signs of a failed water service line, it’s critical to act quickly. An unaddressed water main burst or leak poses serious risks to your health and property and can compromise the structural integrity of the property. The cost to repair damage caused by a failed main water line invariably goes up the longer the problem is not addressed.
If you suspect a water main burst or leak on your property, it’s important to act quickly. Your first call should be to notify your local public water utility. If you live in Salt Lake City, contact the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities utility emergency line at (801) 483-6700. Most properties have a shutoff valve to turn off water flow from the water main in an emergency. In most cases, the public utility will shut off the water in an emergency, but you are able to turn it off yourself. The shutoff valve can be turned off with a water meter key and is normally located near or next to the water meter. Please feel free to Water Main Utah and we can help you locate your shutoff valve.
Once your water line has been turned off, you’ll need to call a water line specialist to evaluate the situation and propose a water line replacement or repair solution. Water Main Utah offers emergency water line services, available 24/7. We’re here when you need us.
If you have an issue with your main water line the next urgent question is whether it makes the most sense to repair or replace the burst or leaking pipe. As a general rule, repairing a water main pipe is less expensive than replacing the service line outright, but that may not always be the best decision in the long run. There are several factors to consider based on the circumstances of your water service line when deciding whether to have a water line replacement or just a spot water line repair.
The typical lifespan of a main water service line is 50-75 years. Above this age, if your service line has a leak or has ruptured, the likelihood is that future leaks and ruptures will become a frequent occurrence unless the pipe is replaced. Cast iron and galvanized pipes are particularly susceptible to corrosion, while copper water lines can be very long lived. Additionally, the aged metal of old pipes can become brittle resulting in challenges to connect it with replacement pipe. Usually the cost of main water line replacement is less than the cost of two separate water service line repairs.
The economics of paying once up front to have the line replaced usually makes more sense than applying a bandage to a line that is showing signs it is failing and will need to be replaced soon anyway.
Older water main lines may be made of galvanized steel or lead material, and for health and safety reasons, pipes made from these materials should be replaced. Additionally, galvanized and cast iron water lines rust and corrode easily and are therefore prone to unexpected ruptures, and as a result doesn’t support standard levels of water pressure. For many reasons, these pipes should always be replaced. Upgrading to PEX, PVC or K copper pipe will reset the lifespan of your water supply system to modern standards.
If your water line was repaired previously, and you’ve had a second issue, it’s an indication the line is at higher risk of failing. Service lines that have been worked on in the past can be prone to breaking again, and a second water line repair can be putting good money after bad.
Many of the costs associated with a water main replacement, such as permitting, tools, equipment, labor, and site restoration, are the same as they are with a water main repair. In general, if the cost of repair is more than 50-60% of the cost of replacement, you are usually money ahead having the service line pipe replaced.
There are a range of different options for replacing an underground water service line. Each water main replacement option has pros and cons.
Since every underground water main replacement job entails its own requirements and limitations and unique challenges, having a range of options is helpful to right-size the approach to the specifics of your property.
Our specialist team can help you assess which is the best approach given the circumstances of your property’s underground water line.
Trenchless water line replacement options offers the distinct advantage of reducing damage to the property without digging a large trench, and can be a streamlined and advantageous approach in many water main replacement scenarios, and is usually less expensive than traditional trenching methods, given the total costs of restoration, but is usually more expensive than the direct costs of traditional trenching for underground water line replacement, requiring specialized equipment and know-how.
Trenchless installation of main water lines using pipe bursting, pipe lining or directional drilling methods enable efficient solutions to many of the most challenging main water line replacement scenarios.
Pipe Bursting is a trenchless method that breaks or ‘bursts’ open the existing pipe through hydraulic force, creating a path that pulls new pipe in the cavity created in one motion. An expansion ‘bursting’ head is pulled with a cable and winch, through the existing water line, simultaneously replacing it with a new line.
Pipe Bursting is Water Main Utah’s preferred method for trenchless water line replacement if creating the necessary access points is cost effective. Pipe Bursting has the advantage that it allows replacing existing piping with a larger diameter pipe for improved water flow. Pipe Bursting works effectively with most pipe material used in underground water pipes here in Utah and can be used regardless of the condition of existing pipe.
Cured In Place Pipe Lining
(CIPP) forms a new pipe within the structure of the existing damaged pipe by inserting an epoxy-soaked liner into the damaged pipe, inflating it with an air bladder, and then heating it to harden. Pipe Lining has two advantages over Pipe Bursting: (1) it only requiring access to one end of the pipe in order to reline the pipe, making it useful in difficult access scenarios and (2) it doesn’t expand the old pipe, making it useful in scenarios where there is no ability to expand around the pipe, or when doing so would cause damage. Pipe Lining requires the condition of the existing pipe to have maintained its circular structure and be sufficiently intact to host the new pipe. Pipe Lining has the disadvantage that, since it is creating a pipe within the damaged pipe, it reduces the diameter, reducing somewhat the water flow capacity.
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) bores a hole horizontally into the ground from an entry access point near the water meter to an exit access point near the structure allowing installation of a new underground water pipe without the need for an existing pipe. Directional Drilling is an excellent trenchless method where the existing water service lateral is can’t be utilized or when relocating a line. Directional Drilling makes the most sense across a yard or landscaped area and isn’t a viable method to install pipe under a slab or in areas where there are unknown utility lines in the vicinity of the drilling.
Trenching and excavation is the most traditional approach to replacing underground water lines and requires digging up the ground along the entire route of the water service line. This is the most direct path and ensures the new pipe is situated properly, but ultimately entails a higher cost both to remove any surface impediments to digging the trench, as well as surface repairs after the line replacement is complete. The process is labor intensive and entails heavy equipment. Frequently the total cost of completing a traditional trenching and excavation project, that includes surface remediation of the landscaping and any concrete that was destroyed, is more expensive than other options, though the direct cost may be less.
Frequently property owners require alterations to their existing water service line capacity or routing due to evolving needs or improvements to the property.
Water Main Utah can evaluate the specific requirements of your project and propose the most effective solution, including using innovative techniques like trenchless directional drilling to add a second water supply line or relocating the existing service line or replacing the original pipe. The main water line, which brings water from the municipal water supply to the home or commercial property, can be made of different materials such as copper, CPVC or PEX, and it is usually buried underground.
Water Main Pros Utah has experience designing creative and cost effective solutions to support sprinkler and irrigation system enhancements, home improvement upgrades requiring increased water flow and other scenarios requiring alterations to your water service line architecture.
In Salt Lake City and the surrounding cities of the Salt Lake Valley, main water line replacement costs $4,000 to $10,000 on average for labor and materials. The total cost will depend on the type of replacement option that is best suited for your budget and system.
$100 to $300 per linear foot
$150 to $250 per linear foot
$100 - $250 per linear foot
$150-$300 per linear foot
The key variables in determining actual cost include existing pipe depth, the length of the water line, the accessibility of the necessary access points, the old pipe material (galvanized pipes can be difficult to work with) and the new pipe material used (copper pipes are particularly high cost compared to plastic pipe alternatives like PEX or PVC), whether the new line needs to be run into the house, and the complexity of your water service lines, such as whether your system has branch connections or offset joints, or slope of the existing pipe and whether it needs to be altered. Added complexity can significantly increase labor costs, which is the primary drive of project cost.
When looking into the costs range, it’s important to take into account that these ranges only account for the direct cost of a main water line replacement: there are additional costs you will invariably incur before the job is done. Surface replacement costs, such as landscaping, hardscaping, driveways and sidewalks damaged or removed as part of the replacement process should be factored in, though are not usually part of the direct costs. Minimizing surface replacement costs is a major benefit of trenchless methods of water line replacement.
Frequently many of the existing valves connected to your main water line also need to be replaced in conjunction with a water main replacement: your main shut-off valve, pressure release valve, and stop and waste valve may need to be replaced.

For all water utility districts in the Salt Lake Valley, including Salt Lake Public Utilities, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy, Murray City Water, Holladay Water Company and the water utility districts serving West Valley City, the property owner is responsible for the water service lateral, or branch line, which extends from the structure (home or commercial building) to the water meter. The water utility district is responsible for the city's main line and its connection to the water meter.
Typically, homeowners insurance policies do not cover private water service line repairs. Homeowners insurance is intended to protect against sudden, unforeseen events. Water main line breaks due to age and normal wear and tear, poor installation, extreme freeze/thaw cycles, soil movement, tree roots or pests, are considered normal aging of the property by homeowners insurance companies, and are not typically part of standard policy coverage.
Many insurers, including speciality insurers, offer service line coverage as an additional policy endorsement to bridge this gap in coverage.
Professional assessment
Water Main Utah can provide you a water main repair quote in an hour or less in many cases via our Instant Quote. If a site visit is required, we guarantee a response time of 4 hours or less. Competitive rates
Once the water line problem is properly diagnosed and a plan of action agreed, we can schedule service to repair your water line. Water Main Utah will typically commence work the next work day depending on Blue Stakes utility line marking and necessary permits coming through.
Preparation and Setup
Once we determine the best main water line replacement method, we create the necessary access to the line. For most trenchless work this entails two access pits at either end of the section of pipe we are replacing. For traditional trenched installation, we dig at least 48" to reach below the frost line.
Line Repair
For Pipe Bursting, we insert the bursting head and pull the new pipe through the line. For Directional Drilling, we bore a pilot hole, enlarge it for the new line then pull the pipe through the hole. For Cured in Place Pipe Lining, we insert an epoxy lining into the line, then roll the liner into contact with the pipe walls, then insert an air bladder to and inflate it until the epoxy cures. For traditional excavation replacements, we bed the line with sand and then lay the pipe.
Reconnection
Once the new pipes are in place, they are connected to your home’s plumbing system. A final inspection is conducted to ensure everything is working correctly and that there are no leaks. The access holes or trench are then filled, and the area is restored to as close to its original condition as possible.
